Investing In Our Community

The Community Foundation San Luis Obispo County continually surveys community needs and opportunities, and uses this information to help guide our donors in their grantmaking.

Available Grants

The Community Foundation is currently accepting grant applications for three grant programs (Community Needs, Community Focus, and Community Strength) and one funding collaborative. Social Innovations Funding Collaborative

Social Innovations Fund (SIF) is a collaboration of funders committed to supporting San Luis Obispo County nonprofit organizations that work with their program participants to build a vibrant community through innovative programs focused on participant personal fulfillment and growth. Funding provided through SIF is designed to encourage nonprofits to take risks and explore new opportunities. Letter of Intent Deadline: Friday, May, 19, 2017 by 5:00pm PST and will ONLY be accepted via email. SIF will support programs from nonprofit organizations that meet one or multiple outlined guidelines:

• Offer leadership opportunities for their participants

• Provide skill building and personal development

• Include mentorship and coaching to support entrepreneurial efforts

• Both new and existing programs are eligible

• Multi-organization collaborations are encouraged

The grant range is $10,000-$50,000 for single or two-year projects. The grant period will be between twelve and twenty-four months after the award is made.As part of the Social Innovations Fund grant process, The Community Foundation is implementing a Letter of Intent (LOI) phase. Below you will find a summary of the information being requested through the LOI.  

     LO Information (800 words max)

  • In detail, articulate the full scope of the project and the community need being addressed.
  • Please describe how your organization engages a variety of voices and/or the clients you partner with in developing and implementing the program and desired outcomes.
  • If this project includes a formal collaboration, please share information about each partner and their contributions to the project.
  • Share the anticipated timeline for the project, including a starting and ending date.

    Budget Narrative (200 words max)

  • Funding Request amount
  • Total project budget
  • What percent of the overall project budget being requested?
  • Organization’s total annual budget

   The Social Innovations Fund will NOT make grants to/for:

  • Individuals
  • Endowment funds or Capital projects
  • Organizations that discriminate on the basis of age, disability, ethnic origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, race or religion
  • Fraternal Organizations, unless in support of a specific program open to or benefiting the entire community
  • Governmental Organizations
  • Fundraising events such as annual campaigns, walk-a-thons, tournaments, fashion shows, auctions or dinners
  • Organizations with religious affiliations unless the program is open to the entire community without regard to religious beliefs
  • Organizations and programs designed to elect candidates to public office
  • Organizations located outside San Luis Obispo
  • Pay off past debts or existing obligations
  • Scholarships, fellowships, travel grants and technical or specialized research

 

Community Needs Grant Program

The Community Needs Grant Program focuses on direct services in one of the areas listed below. These services are achieved through community building, promoting cultural inclusion and education. The application will become available on February 22, 2017. The proposal deadline is March 31,2017 at 5:00 pm PST. The maximum available grant size is $10,000. Notifications of the awards will be announced in mid-June 2017.  PLEASE NOTEAll applications MUST be submitted online. Paper applications will NOT be accepted.

•Arts & Culture:  supporting programs which promote the creation, engagement, and appreciation of diverse forms of arts and/or an understanding of local history

•Environment: education and sustainability, including climate change mitigation, sustainable agriculture and forestry, water and land conservation

•Health:  preventive health care and overcoming barriers to both physical and mental health care

•Human Services: basic needs and social service programs. Projects addressing:

  • Homeless, Seniors, Senior Dances, People with Disabilities.

BUILD (Building Unity, Infrastructure, Leadership, Development) Small Grants Program: Applications will be reviewed twice in 2017 - on March 31, 2017 and September 15, 2017. Infrastructure and strengthening grants for up to $2,500 will be available only to organizations with an annual operating budget below $300,000.

Community Focus Grant Program

Community Focus Grants work closely with Field of Interest and donor designated funds to address the three specific focus areas in the community described below.

1)       Women’s Legacy Fund Grant(s):

The Women’s Legacy Fund will focus its grantmaking on programs or projects which build resilience and empower girls with the skills, knowledge, and support to overcome gender inequities and stereotypes. The application will be available starting on February 22, 2017. The proposal deadline is April 21, 2017 at 5:00 pm PST. Maximum available grant size will be a total of $45,000 for single or two-year proposals.  Proposal notifications for awards will be announced in mid-June 2017. PLEASE NOTE: All applications MUST be submitted online. Paper applications will NOT be accepted.

The Women’s Legacy Fund will consider proposals which:

  • Strengthen or expand existing programs;
  • Develop or introduce new strategies to the community;
  • Support one year or multi-year (up to 2 years) projects;
  • Maximum grant size will be a total of $45,000 for single or two-year proposals

2)     Growing Together Fund:

The Growing Together Grants are facilitated by the Advisory Committee and will focus on addressing the most pressing needs in the LGBTQ Community. The application will be available starting on February 222017. The proposal deadline is April 2, 2017 at 5:00 pm PST. The maximum available grant size is $3,000 and notifications of the awards will be made in mid-June 2017All applications MUST be submitted online.Paper applications will NOT be accepted.

The Growing Together Initiative Fund will consider proposals which are focused on:

  • Anti-LGBTQ violence
  • Housing discrimination
  • Civil rights advocacy
  • LGBTQ supportive mental health
  • Reduction of bullying /harassment
  • Youth services

3)     Janssen Youth & Youth Sports: organizations providing youth enrichment programs and/or youth sports programs in San Luis Obispo County:

The Robert H. Janssen Youth & Youth Sports grants support programs which enrich the lives of local youth and ideally reflect the Search Institute’s 40 Developmental Assets. The fund’s primary initiative is to support youth sport programs and youth enrichment activities in SLO County, with an emphasis on active participation versus educational programming. The application will be available beginning on February 22, 2017. The proposal deadline is April 21, 2017at 5:00 pm PST. The maximum available grant size is $5,000 and notifications of the awards will be made in mid-June 2017. All applications MUST be submitted online. Paper applications will NOT be accepted.

Community Strength Grant Program

The Community Strength Grant Program focuses on empowering and strengthening members of our community to overcome obstacles while embarking on the road to self-sufficiency. Three available grant opportunities are described below.

1)      Klaproad Basic Needs

The focus of the Klaproad Basic Needs grant program is to provide for the immediate needs of the homeless in the Five Cities/South SLO County area. The goal is to expand and strengthen the existing services for the homeless in the Five Cities area and to support a continuum of services for South County homeless in hopes of stabilizing and moving the homeless population into permanent housing. The application will be available as of February 22, 2017. The proposal deadline is September 15, 2017at 5:00 pm PST. The available grant size range is $10,000 - $25,000 and notifications of the awards will be made in mid-November 2017All applications MUST be submitted online. Paper applications will NOT be accepted.

Priorities of the Klaproad Basic Needs include:

  • Food and meal distribution
  • Emergency shelter/transitional housing
  • Cash-aid for basic needs
  • Transportation
  • Rapid re-housing strategies
  • Housing subsidies or short-term housing assistance

2)     Opportunity to Thrive

The Opportunity to Thrive grant program supports organizations utilizing a family advocate or case manager to develop and track a client’s self-sufficiency plan. The fund supports organizations that have demonstrated the ability to administer and monitor a hardship assistance fund. Ultimately, Opportunity to Thrive endeavors to support one-time assistance that will make a significant difference in removing a barrier or hurdle to self-sufficiency. The application will be available on February 22, 2017. The proposal deadline is September 15, 2017,at 5:00 pm PST. The maximum available grant size is $10,000 and notifications of the awards will be made in mid-November 2017. All applications MUST be submitted online. Paper applications will NOT be accepted.

3)     Gay Straight Alliance

This fund is established for the advocacy beyond campus. It is to support the continuity of the club and sustainability of such clubs. It is also established to promote community education. The application will be available February 22, 2017. The proposal deadline will be September 15, 2017, at 5:00 pm PST. The maximum grant size is $500 and notifications of the awards will be announced Mid-November 2017

Strategic Initiatives

Through grants and programs, we use strategic investments for addressing unmet or emerging community needs. These needs may be met through field of interest funds established to distribute grants for local programs. As new grant programs are developed, information and guidelines are made available on this site and announced through the Executive Director's List-Serv.

  • The Community Foundation does not accept proposals or applications outside of the scheduled grant cycle.
  • The applications for each grant program are posted on this website.
  • The releases of various application guidelines are announced throughout the year via the Executive Director's List-Serv, administered by KCBX.net.
  • Nonprofit organizations should subscribe to the Executive Director's List-Serv in order to be notified of grant opportunities in a timely manner. Subscribe now to this free service.
