The Community Foundation San Luis Obispo County's scholarship program began in 2000. Earlier this year, 54 students received scholarships and awards totaling more than $200,000. See a listing of our 2016 recipients.

The Community Foundation's Scholarship Program includes the following opportunities:

Jennifer Thoma Memorial Ballet Scholarship

The Jennifer Thoma Memorial Ballet Scholarship was established to help local dancers realize their own dreams. The scholarship will provide support for dancers to attend summer intensive ballet training programs. (see more

Eligibility:

Applicant is currently enrolled in school or can show proof of being home-schooled and between the ages of 12 and 19.

  1. Applicant is a resident of San Luis Obispo County and is a U. S. Citizen or eligible non-citizen
  2. Applicant plans to attend a summer intensive ballet training program. Program must be at least three weeks in length.

Selection Criteria Criteria:

  1. Description of an appreciation for creation and performance of dance.
  2. Demonstration of ballet aptitude.
  3. A letter of recommendation from a dance instructor or mentor.
  4. Demonstration of dedication to school as evidenced by a GPA of 2.0 or greater.
  5. Consideration of financial need. If need is a factor, the applicant should cite reasons in their application. 

The Jennifer Thoma Memorial Ballet Scholarship Committee intends to award one $2,500 scholarship.

Helen and Ronald Dunin Scholarship

The Helen and Ronald Dunin Scholarship was established to honor the legacy of the Dunins’ desire to help people who are attempting to help themselves.

Eligibility

  1. Applicant is a resident of San Luis Obispo County
  2. Applicant is an adult, not currently enrolled in high school.
  3. Applicant is preferably a re-entry student.
  4. Applicant must enroll in a minimum of 6 credit hours (half-time)/term.
  5. Applicant has demonstrated financial need (declared "Independent student status" on FAFSA)

Selection Criteria:

  1. Applicant exhibits ability to be successful in their goal of achieving a post-secondary education; and,
  2. Applicant describes work history since high school and /or any gap in work history; and,
  3. Applicant addresses in essay format his/her educational and life goals.

Multiple Awards.

Annual award range $1,000 - $2,500 (minimum value to include cost of tuition, books, fees and supplies).

Renewable award (up to $10,000 over multiple years if eligibility maintained)

Scholarships for High School and Undergraduate Applicants 

Maureen “Mo” Clancy Memorial Scholarship

Established to honor the memory of Maureen “Mo” Clancy. Mo lived to help others and will forever be remembered as a strong-willed, loving and passionate person. She will forever be in the hearts of those who loved her, and with this scholarship, her legacy of service, love and compassion will live on. The scholarship will provide support to girls who participated during high school in cross country and/or track and field and who will pursue a post-secondary education.

 Eligibility:

  1. Applicant is currently a senior girl at a San Luis Obispo County high school, and;
  2. Applicant is planning to attend full-time at an approved community college, four-year college or vocational school.

Selection Criteria:

  1. Participation during high school in cross country and or track and field and essay describing what the sport meant to you, and;
  2. Demonstration of satisfactory academic achievement (2.0 or greater), and;
  3. Demonstration of school and community involvement.

The Scholarship Committee wishes to award a $2,000 scholarship.

Applications for the 2018 Maureen "Mo" Clancy Memorial Scholarship will open December 1, 2017.

Dennis T. Collins /Thomas D. Salisbury Troop 60 Eagle Scout Memorial Scholarship

The Dennis T.Collins /Thomas D. Salisbury Troop 60 Eagle Scout Memorial Scholarship Fund was established to provide an educational scholarship fund for the benefit of Eagle Scouts from Boy Scout Troop 60 of Paso Robles, CA, in memory of former Scoutmasters Dennis Collins and Thomas Salisbury.

Eligibility:

  1. A candidate must be an Eagle Scout from Paso Robles Troop 60;
  2. He must have at least a 3.0 GPA, and will be using the award at a four year college to which he has been accepted, either directly following high school, as a transferee from a community college, or if currently enrolled as an undergraduate at a four year college.

Note: A break in his schooling due to military service or work experience, for health-related issues, or for volunteer service, ministry or travel does not render the otherwise qualified Eagle Scout from Troop 60 ineligible.

The Scholarship Committee intends to award at least one $1,500 scholarship.

Applications for the 2018 Dennis T. Collins/Thomas D. Salisbury Troop 60 Eagle Scout Memorial Scholarship will open December 1, 2017.

Sera Day Coryell Nursing Education Scholarship

The Sera Day Coryell Nursing Education Scholarship provides scholarship support for graduating seniors attending high school in San Luis Obispo County. Sera Day Coryell aspired to be a Nurse Practitioner and, despite significant medical challenges, was attaining her goal when she died unexpectedly. Her ability to make people feel at ease, her intelligence and motivation suggested that she would have been an outstanding nurse. Her family and friends created the scholarship for individuals who likewise wish to become nurses.

Eligibility:

  1. Applicant is currently a senior attending any high school in San Luis Obispo County, including home-schooled students.
  2. Applicant plans to attend a four-year college with an approved Registered Nursing Program full-time (minimum course load of 15 units each term).
  3. Applicant has evaluated financial need.

The Scholarship Committee intends to award one $2,000 scholarship that will be annually renewable providing that the student is making satisfactory progress toward Nursing Program requirements and maintains a 3.0 GPA.

Applications for the 2018 Sera Day Coryell Nursing Education Scholarship will open December 1, 2017.

Douglas DeGross Scholarship in Automotive Studies

The Douglas DeGross Scholarship for Automotive Studies provides support to graduating high school seniors in San Luis Obispo County who are pursuing a career in the automotive industry. The applicant must be committed to pursuing a post-secondary education specializing in automotive studies at an approved community college, four-year college/university or vocational school.

The Douglas DeGross Scholarship for Automotive Studies was established in memory of the diligence and success of Douglas DeGross. Doug had over 30 years of experience in automotive/truck engineering, operations, sales & marketing, and senior management.

Eligibility:

  1. Applicant is currently a senior at a comprehensive San Luis Obispo County high school; continuation high school; a home-schooled program within the county; or a student majoring in Automotive Studies at Cuesta College.
  2. Applicant is a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen.
  3. Applicant is planning to pursue a post-secondary education specializing in automotive studies at an approved community college, four-year college/university or vocational school.

Selection Criteria:

  1. Description of an appreciation for automobile studies through one of three forms of media:
    • Essay
    • Video
    • PowerPoint presentation
  2. Demonstration of academic achievement
  3. Demonstration of financial need

Submission of a letter of recommendation speaking to applicant's  passion for automotive studies    

The Scholarship Committee intends to award one $2,000 scholarship.

Applications for the 2018 Douglas DeGross Scholarship in Automotive Studies will open December 1, 2017.

John and Yvonne Hsu Edmisten Scholarship in memory of Allan Voight M.D.

The John and Yvonne Hsu Edmisten Scholarship in Memory of Allan Voigt M.D. was established to support students graduating from San Luis Obispo, Mission College Preparatory Catholic or Pacific Beach High School. The student must plan to major in science, technology, engineering, performing arts, or mathematics in pursuit of a baccalaureate degree in a four-year college or university.

Dr. Voigt was a physician who retired to San Luis Obispo after a distinguished career in medicine. He was an avid supporter of the performing arts.

Eligibility:

  1. Applicant is a member of the current graduating class of San Luis Obispo, Mission College Preparatory Catholic, or Pacific Beach High School;
  2. The student must plan to major in science, technology, engineering, performing arts or mathematics in pursuit of a baccalaureate degree in a four-year college or university.

Selection Criteria:

  1. Applicant must exhibit academic achievement, and;
  2. Applicant must demonstrate financial need, and;
  3. Applicant should describe participation in the performing arts. (Performing Arts Resume)

The scholarship committee intends to award one $2,500 scholarship.

Applications for the 2018 John & Yvonne Hsu Edmisten Scholarship in memory of Allan Voight, M.D. will open December 1, 2017.

 

The Garris Family Scholarship

Established to support students from public high schools or home-schooled programs in San Luis Obispo County in achieving post-secondary education at a vocational school, community college or four-year college/university. The purpose of the fund is to support deserving students planning to pursue a post-secondary education.

Eligibility:

  1. Applicant is currently a senior at a public high school in San Luis Obispo County; or a home-schooled graduating student or student who has earned their GED during the current school year.
  2. Applicant plans to attend full time (12-15 units) or part-time (6-12 units) at a community college or four-year college/university or a career or technical school (vocational programs).
  3. Applicant has demonstrated financial need and is Pell Grant eligible
  4. Preference will be given to students who are the first generation in their family to attend college.
  5. A minimum high school cumulative GPA of 2.5 to a maximum cumulative GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale

Selection Criteria:

  1. Applicant exhibits a strong desire to learn, and;
  2. Applicant demonstrates involvement in school and/or community activities experience or provides work history throughout their high school years
  3. Applicant exhibits personal success skills (e.g., emotional maturity, motivation, perseverance, self-reliance etc.)
  4. Applicant involvement in college readiness, youth development organizations or vocational programs while during high school years.

The Scholarship Committee intends to award up to $14,000 in scholarships. Award value will be dependent on post-secondary institution.

Four Year College/University- award range $8,000 to $10,000 over four years ($2,000 - $2,500/year).

Community College - award range $3,000 to $4,000 over two years ($1,500 - $2,000/year).

Career or technical school (vocational program) - award range $1,500 to $2,000 over one to two years.

David B. Gianas Memorial Scholarship

Established in memory of David B. Gianas, this educational scholarship is for students attending a comprehensive or continuation high school in Atascadero or Paso Robles with documented special needs. It benefits students who, because of their unique differences, find achieving their educational goals difficult because of the lack of encouragement and/or financial resources. Through this scholarship, Margaret A. Krause seeks to create a helping hand to the type of students her husband taught and mentored. He lifted the spirits of those who were hurting and needed support, and reminded them that they didn't have to lose their personality to be loved and respected in the world.

Eligibility:

  1. Students in their senior year attending a comprehensive or continuation high school in Atascadero or Paso Robles.
  2. Students must have (or have had) an Individual Educational Plan (IEP).
  3. Students must have an educational plan which includes full-time enrollment at an approved two-year community college, vocational or trade school or four year university upon completion of high school.

The Scholarship Committee intends to award at least three (3) $1,500 scholarships to high school candidates.

Applications for the 2018 David B. Gianas Memorial Scholarship will open December 1, 2017.

Gary Grossman Scholarship

The Gary Grossman Scholarship was established to provide post-secondary scholarship assistance to high school or college students who are gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender.

Eligibility:

  1. Established for current or potential students with at least a 2.5 GPA who identify as LGBTQ.
  2. Students reside in SLO county or the Santa Maria Basin.

NOTE: Current or potential students whose parents or legal guardians are financially unable or refuse to support their son or daughters’ college expenses because they are gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender will have preferred status

The Gary Grossman Scholarship Committee would like to award a total of $5,000 in scholarships. Individual awards will be valued at no less than $1,000.

Applications for the 2018 Gary Grossman Scholarship will open December 1, 2017.

IQMS Scholarship

The IQMS Scholarship is a four year college scholarship. Its purpose is to foster the development of local talent that can bring skills and leadership to community businesses after their college education is completed.  The IQMS Scholarship is targeted at those students pursuing a baccalaureate degree in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM).

Eligibility:

  1. Applicant is current member of the graduating class at a high school in San Luis Obispo County, and;
  2. Applicant must be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen, and;
  3. Applicant plans to enroll full-time at an approved four-year college and major in the STEM field, and;
  4. Demonstration of Financial Need will be considered.

Selection Criteria:

  1. Applicant exhibits a strong academic record, and;
  2. Applicant demonstrates involvement in their school and/or community activities throughout their high school years.

Scholarship Committee wishes to award two (2) scholarships in 2017. Each award shall be $20,000 and disbursed according to the following table:

The IQMS Scholarship will not be awarded in 2018.

Kiwanis Club San Luis Obispo Scholarship

The Kiwanis SLO de Tolosa Scholarship was created to provide scholarship support to deserving students. The scholarship’s Selection Criteria is made without regard to race, color, creed, religion, gender disability or national origin.

Eligibility:

  1. Applicant is currently a senior at a San Luis Obispo, Pacific Beach or Mission College Preparatory High School.
  2. Planning to attend full-time at an approved four-year college.

Selection Criteria:

  1. Demonstration of academic achievement, and;
  2. Demonstration of leadership or involvement in their school community throughout their high school career, and;
  3. Demonstration of financial need.

The scholarship committee intends to award one $2,500 scholarship.

Applications for the 2018 Kiwanis Club San Luis Obispo Scholarship will open December 1, 2017.

Martin Resorts Scholarship

The purpose of the Martin Resorts Scholarship is to support the children of Martin Resorts employees planning to continue their education after high school. The scholarship aims to recognize student leadership and achievements.

Eligibility:

  1. Applicant is a current member of the graduating class of a high school in San Luis Obispo County, and;
  2. Applicant is a child of a current Martin Resorts employee, and;
  3. Applicant must be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen, and;
  4. Applicant plans to enroll full-time at an approved four-year college, community college or vocational school and;
  5. Demonstration of Financial Need will be considered.

Applicants that are  family members of the Martin Family are ineligible for the scholarships. Family members shall include spouses, siblings, children and grandchildren connected by birth, adoption, marriage, civil partnership, or cohabitation.

Selection Criteria:

  1. Applicant exhibits a strong academic record, and;
  2. Applicant demonstrates involvement in their school and/or community activities throughout their high school years, and;
  3. Applicant’s success in overcoming special challenge will be considered, if applicable.

The scholarship committee intends to award two $1,500 scholarships.

Applications for the 2018 Martin Resorts Scholarship will open December 1, 2017.

Kelly A. McAdams Scholarship

The Kelly A. McAdams Memorial Scholarship Fund was established to honor the memory of Kelly A. McAdams, a graduate of our local schools and a life long student with an inquisitive mind. The award is intended to support a deserving high school student from San Luis Obispo County.

Eligibility:

  1. Applicant is currently a senior at a high school in San Luis Obispo County and;
  2. Applicant is planning to attend full-time at an approved four-year college/university and;
  3. The qualifying student will exhibit a (1) strong academic record, and (2) demonstration of leadership potential and (3) evaluated financial need.

The McAdams Scholarship is a multi-year $2,500 scholarship. Total value over four years is $10,000.

Applications for the 2018 Kelly A. McAdams Scholarship will open December 1, 2017.

Justin McCutcheon Memorial Scholarship

In memory of Justin McCutcheon, this scholarship will be awarded annually to a senior golfer attending a high school in San Luis Obispo or northern Santa Barbara County that participates in the PAC-8 sports league.

Eligibility:

  1. Applicant is a senior class member of their school’s Golf Team; and
  2. Holds the record for the lowest stroke average in regular season matches at their school;
  3. Exemplifies the core values of perseverance, respect and sportsmanship; and
  4. Plans to continue his/her education at a vocational school, community college or four year college or university.

The Scholarship Committee intends to award one $1,000 scholarship.

Applications for the 2018 Justin McCutcheon Memorial Scholarship will open December 1, 2017.

Stephen Donnellan Moss Scholarship in Journalism

The Stephen Donnellan Moss Memorial Scholarship in Journalism Fund was established to provide scholarship assistance to deserving students at California Polytechnic State University - San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly)

Eligibility:

Applicant must be a current, full-time student majoring in Journalism and pursuing a News Editorial or Broadcast track at Cal Poly.

In addition, an applicant must meet the following criteria listed:

  1. Applicant must be a member of the sophomore class or higher;
  2. Applicant has a demonstrated commitment to journalism beyond academic achievement;
  3. Applicant demonstrates a commitment to the San Luis Obispo County community;
  4. Applicant describes career intentions in essay format;
  5. Applicant has evaluated financial need.

The Scholarship Committee intends to award one $1,500 scholarship.

Applications for the 2018 Stephen Donnellan Moss Scholarship in Journalism will open December 1, 2017.

Gary Paul Piantanida Scholarship

Eligibility:

  1. Applicant is currently a senior at a San Luis Obispo County high school or homeschool and;
  2. Applicant is planning to attend full-time at an approved four-year college.
  3. Student may begin study at a two year college and;
  4. Applicant is a U.S. Citizen.

Selection Criteria:

  1. Demonstration of satisfactory academic record, and;
  2. Demonstration of involvement in their school and community activities throughout their high school years, and;
  3. Demonstration of financial need, and;
  4. Submission of one letter of recommendation, speaking to student’s;

Work Ethic, Dependability, Integrity

The Piantanida Scholarship is a multi-year $3,000 scholarship. Total value over four years is $12,000. Student may elect to begin post-secondary education at a two or four year college/university. However, if a student attends a community college he/she must maintain satisfactory academic progress so as to transfer to a four year college/university after two years.

Annually renewable if eligibility is maintained by enrolling and completing an average of 15 units per semester/quarter with a GPA of 2.5 or better.

Burt W. Polin and Virginia Polin “Elks” Scholarship

The Burt W. and Virginia Elks Scholarship was established at The Community Foundation to honor the legacy of the Polins. Burt Polin was born in San Luis Obispo in 1914 and died in San Luis Obispo in 2006 after being married to his wife, Virginia, for nearly 70 years. He was a dry land wheat rancher for more than 40 years on land on the Carrizo Plains he inherited from his grandfather. He was a shrewd real estate investor and became a broker in 1964, opening Polin-Truchan Realty. Virginia was born in Pittsburgh, PA and moved to California in her early 20s. She died in 2010. The Polins were very active in the community. Burt was active with the Elks Club and the Caballeros, and Virginia sang in many groups and choirs as a soprano. This scholarship is based on what the Elks Club stands for: Charity, Justice, Patriotism, Good Fellowship, Service to people and the community through benevolent programs.

Eligibility:

  1. Applicant is currently a senior or graduate from a San Luis Obispo County high school or continuation high school and;
  2. Applicant is planning to attend full-time at an approved four-year college/university during the 2017-18 academic year and;
  3. Applicant is pursuing a degree in public safety

Selection Criteria:

  1. Applicant will exhibit a (a) strong academic record, 3.0 GPA or higher and (b) demonstrate active involvement in their school and community.
  2. Applicant must submit one letter of recommendation from an adult who can speak to the tenet your application essay addresses.

The Scholarship Committee would like to award one merit-based $2,000 scholarship.

Applications for the 2018 Burt W. Polin & Virginia Polin Scholarship will open December 1, 2017.

Dorothy Ross Memorial Scholarship

The Dorothy Ross Memorial Scholarship was established at The Community Foundation to honor the volunteer work and service that Dorothy Ross contributed to the young people in the San Luis Obispo County Juvenile Services Center. She spent more than 12 years volunteering time as a mentor and firmly believed that all young people have special gifts and something to give back to the world. This program honors Dorothy's legacy and her belief in the young people she cared about so deeply.

Eligibility:

  1. Applicant must be a graduating senior from a San Luis Obispo County high school, continuation high school or County Office of Education Community School.
  2. Applicant has spent time in the San Luis Obispo Juvenile Detention Services Center and plans to attend a community college, four-year college/university or certified vocational program.
  3. Applicant demonstrates a life change and a commitment to higher education.
  4. Applicant must submit two letters of recommendation.

The scholarship committee plans to award two (2) $1,000.00 awards.

Applications for the 2018 Dorothy Ross Memorial Scholarship will open December 1, 2017.

Richard K. Sauret Viticulture & Enology Scholarship

The Richard K. Sauret Viticulture & Enology Scholarship provides for educational scholarships for students desiring to study viticulture or enology at a four year college or university.

Eligibility:

  1. Applicant is currently a senior at any high school in San Luis Obispo County.
  2. Applicant is a U.S. Citizen.
  3. Applicant is planning to attend full-time at an approved four-year college majoring in viticulture and enology.

NOTE: preference will be given to students planning to attend California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, California State University, Fresno and University of California, Davis.

The scholarship committee plans to award one $12,000.00 scholarship, distributed over the course of four years.

The Richard K. Sauret Viticulture & Enology Scholarship will NOT be awarded in 2018.

Alan D. Stephenson Scholarship

The Alan D. Stephenson Scholarship was established to support promising LGBTQ students to achieve their academic potential. The scholarship is open to students graduating from high school in San Luis Obispo County.

Eligibility

  1. Applicant is graduating senior at a high school in San Luis Obispo County planning to attend full-time at an approved four-year college, and;
  2. Applicant identifies as LGBTQ , and;
  3. Applicant’s high school GPA is 2.75 or greater, and;
  4. Applicant has demonstrated financial need, and;
  5. Applicant is a U.S. citizen.

Selection Criteria

  1. Demonstration of academic achievement
  2. Demonstration of involvement in their school and community activities throughout their high school years

The Stephenson Scholarship is a multi-year $2,500 scholarship. Total value over four years is $10,000.

Annually renewable if eligibility is maintained by enrolling and completing an average of 15 units per semester/quarter with a GPA of 3.0 or better.

Applications for the 2018 Alan D. Stephenson Scholarship will open December 1, 2017..

Alfred I., Catharine J. & Eleanor G. Switzer Scholarship

The Alfred I., Catharine J. and Eleanor G. Switzer Scholarship was established to benefit youth who reside in Los Osos, CA

Eligibility:

  1. Applicant has resided continuously in Los Osos from at least the 5th grade and attended Los Osos Middle School and;
  2. Applicant is currently a senior at a Mission College Prep, Morro Bay, or San Luis Obispo High School and;
  3. Applicant will attend full-time at an approved four-year college/university, and;
  4. Applicant will pursue a bachelor's degree in any of the following fields: Applied or Fine Arts, Architecture, Engineering, Mathematics or Science.

Selection Criteria:

The qualifying student will demonstrate (a) financial need (b) strong academic record, and (c) demonstration of leadership and involvement in community and extracurricular activities.

The Switzer Scholarship is a multi-year $4,000 scholarship. Total value over four years is $16,000.

* $4,000/year providing the recipient maintains satisfactory collegiate academic performance as defined by enrollment and completion of an average of 15 units per semester/quarter with a GPA of 3.0 or better.

Applications for the 2018 Alfred I., Catherine J. & Eleanor G. Switzer Scholarship will open December 1, 2017.

Brian Waterbury Memorial Scholarship Award

The Brian Waterbury Memorial Scholarship was established to honor the memory of Brian Waterbury. Brian Waterbury was a teacher and coach at San Luis Obispo High School for 30 years. He taught all levels of mathematics, but truly enjoyed the Honors Trigonometry course, as well as teaching Computer Science, Physics, and Physical Education. He coached both boys and girls cross country and track, from 1973 through 1987, before heading to the District office for a few years, to run the District’s EdTech program. When he returned to teaching, he continued to stay involved in helping with track and cross country meets, or simply running with the team as a personal workout.

Purpose:

The scholarship is awarded each year to a student who has participated in cross country and track and who has demonstrated high academic excellence in mathematics.

Eligibility:

           1. Applicant is a senior attending San Luis Obispo High School; and

           2. Applicant is a member of the cross country and track and field teams; and

           3. Applicant demonstrated a high excellence in academics; and

           4. Applicant is planning to continue their education at a community college or four year college or university.

The Scholarship Committee would like to award one $2,000 scholarship.

Applications for the 2018 Brian Waterbury Memorial Scholarship will open December 1, 2017.

Richard J. Weyhrich Leadership Award

The Richard J. Weyhrich Leadership Scholarship is awarded in memory of the leadership and generosity of Richard John Weyhrich. As a young man, Weyhrich graduated from West Point and received a commission in the U.S. Army, embarking on a leadership path that would define his career. As a successful financial advisor and consultant, Weyhrich later helped establish the Herbert Alumni Center at the West Point Military Academy. He also supported numerous local organizations including Hospice of San Luis Obispo, Cuesta College, the Performing Arts Center in San Luis Obispo, and the Clark Center in Arroyo Grande. Weyhrich's driving passion was empowering and encouraging individuals with leadership potential, a passion that continues to live on through this scholarship.

Eligibility:

  1. Applicant is currently a senior at a comprehensive high school in San Luis Obispo County; or a continuation high school in San Luis Obispo County;
  2. Applicant is planning to attend school as a full-time student at an approved vocational school, community college or four-year college/university during the 2016-17 academic year and;

Selection Criteria:

The qualifying students have demonstrated strong leadership skills as well as a dedication to serving the San Luis Obispo County community.

The Richard J. Weyhrich Scholarship Committee would like to award at least one $5,000 ($2,000 in  year one, $3,000 in year two) scholarship to a student at each comprehensive high school in San Luis Obispo County, and one to a continuation high school student in San Luis Obispo County. Recipients will be recognized by the San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors at their May 2018 meeting.

Applications for the 2018 Richard J. Weyhrich Leadership Award Scholarship will open December 1, 2017.

Marion C. and Mark W. Wilson Nursing Scholarship

The Marion C. and Mark W. Wilson Nursing Scholarship was established to support Nipomo High School graduating seniors or alumni enrolling in an approved Nursing Program.

Eligibility

  1.  Applicant is currently a senior attending any Nipomo High School in San Luis Obispo County or applicant is a recent graduate (no longer than three years prior) from Nipomo High School and is accepted as a student into a Certified Nursing Assistant Program, a Licensed Vocational Nursing Program or a Registered Nursing Program.
  2. Applicant plans to attend full-time (minimum course load of 12-15 units) at a vocational school, a community college or four-year college/university with an approved Nursing Program (s) as noted above.
  3. Applicant's financial need will be considered.

Selection Criteria

  1. Applicant will have a strong academic record, and; 
  2. Applicant will exhibit involvement in their school and/or community throughout their high school years, and;An essay describing Nursing career aspirations, and;
  3. Two letters of recommendation, one academic and one community member, attesting to the student’s ability to become a Certified Nursing Assistant, Licensed Vocational Nurse or a Registered Nurse.

NOTE: Student must be accepted into a Nursing Program to claim scholarship.

Award Values:

  • CERTIFIED NURSING ASSISTANT PROGRAM
    • minimum award of $500
  • LICENSED VOCATIONAL NURSING PROGRAM
    • minimum award of $1,500
  • REGISTERED NURSE PROGRAM
    • Associate Degree: minimum award of $2,000 renewable one time
    • Baccalaureate Degree: minimum award of $2,000 renewable three times

Award Notes:

  • To renew scholarship, recipient must be enrolled in college or university, maintain progress towards degree attainment and earning a 2.5 GPA.

Applications for the 2018 Marion C. and Mark W. Wilson Nursing Scholarship will open December 1, 2017.

Yeager Science Scholarship

The Yeager Science Scholarship was established to provide scholarship support to students graduating from Coast Union, Morro Bay or Paso Robles High School. The four-year scholarship's purpose is to make a positive difference in the life of the recipient (and thereby also in the larger society). It is targeted especially at students who, because of being economically/culturally disadvantaged, would find attending college difficult or unlikely without the encouragement and financial help provided by a scholarship. The scholarship is targeted at students intending to major in the physical sciences and related fields.

Eligibility:

  1. Applicant is member of the current graduating class of Coast Union, Morro Bay or Paso Robles High School, and;
  2. Applicant intends to major in such physical/technical areas as chemistry, physics, geology, mathematics, engineering, computer science. (Applicants planning to pursue a degree in biological, health, environmental, physical therapy and related areas of life sciences are not eligible to apply for this scholarship.)
  3. Applicant plans to enroll full-time and complete his/her baccalaureate degree by either:
  4. Attending a California Community College with a plan to transfer to a California State University, OR University of California institution within two years, OR attend a California State University or University of California institution for all four years. (Scholarship may NOT be used to attend a private California college/university or any out of state college/university.)

Selection Criteria:

Applicant has strong academic record and financial need.

The Scholarship Committee intends to award one $23,000 scholarship to be disbursed according to the following schedule providing the recipient maintains eligibility.

Year 1
$3,000 divided equally over between terms for the academic year
Year 2
$5,000 divided equally over between terms for the academic year
Year 3
$7,000 divided equally over between terms for the academic year
Year 4
$8,000 divided equally over between terms for the academic year

Applications for the 2018 Yeager Science Scholarship will open December 1, 2017.

In addition, The Community Foundation holds a number of scholarship funds on behalf of local organizations and donors.
